The name of the remote server, either one that you get articles from or send articles to, should be entered here. The name is a host/domain name like news.isp.com.
In some cases your server may not have an IP host name (for instance, when you have a DHCP obtained IP address). In this case you may chose to specify a local name for your host. This local name is used as an alias for your host when adding the name of your host to the Path header in incoming articles. If this doesn't make sense to you, leave this field blank.
If you intend to receive articles from a remote news server, there are two ways that can happen. One is for that remote server to push articles to your server. This option requires that the system administrator of the remote system to configure that remote system to push articles to yours.
The second method of getting articles on your server is for your server pull articles from a remote server. This does not require the cooperation of the remote server's system administrator, but is a much less efficient way of getting articles. This method should not be used for large numbers of news groups or news groups that are extremely active. Failure to heed this warning may invite the wrath of the remote system's administrator.
Do not accept articles from this host | Choose this option if you do not wish to receive articles from this host |
Accept articles from this host | Choose this option if you expect the remote server to push articles to you |
Actively pull articles from this host | Choose this option if you want your server to pull articles from this host |
If the Actively pull option has been chosen, you may specify how often that RumorMill should attempt to pull articles from the remote host. Leaving this value set to zero (0) says to use the system wide default specified on the Newsfeeds page.
Select this option if you want your server to send articles to this host. If this option is selected, you may specify how often RumorMill should try to send articles to this host.
The remote host that you have specified may require authentication (or login) to use that news server. If so, you may specify the user name and password here.
The three (3) lists specified on this page are optional. By leaving them blank, you are specifying that RumorMill should:
If you wish to specify lists of groups, you may do that for any of the three lists. Simply type in a list of groups as desired, separating the group names by commas. You may also use "!" for negation, and "*" as a wild card. A few examples follow.
Example | Description |
* | Short hand for all groups |
!microsoft*,* | No groups starting with "microsoft", but any other groups are allowed |
rec.bicycles.racing, rec.photo.digital, rec.photo.marketplace.digital, comp.sys.mac.portables | Limit actions to this host to the four (4) groups specified |
