Bibfilex

Bibfilex is an open source, multi-platform and free software project that allows you to create and manage archives of bibliographical items, including articles and books. It is a bibliographic manager for Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

Archive and catalog items according to the Biblatex specification

The application has been designed in such a way that it can archive and catalog items according to the Biblatex specification. It allows users to attach files to any item in a catalog, export and import data in the Biblatex format, temporarily store specific keywords for later use, enable auto-completion of data, as well as to insert special keywords and characters.

Items can be filtered

With Bibfilex, you can filter the stored items on a single field, on three fields or less, by keywords or by the BibTex keys enclosed in a LaTeX document. In addition, it is possible to replace citation commands, associate various attachments, automatically create unique BibTex keys, and specify the columns displayed in the grid view of the data.

Supports bookmarks

Another interesting feature is the ability to compose citations for one or more bibliographical items based on a user-defined pattern. In addition, it supports bookmarks, allowing the user to easily navigate to a specific item.

Supports mainstream desktop environments

The application is available for download as a source archive, as well as binary packages for RPM- and DEB-based Linux operating systems, with graphical user interfaces written in the GTK+ and Qt GUI toolkits. It supports mainstream desktop environments, including GNOME, KDE, Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE, LXDE, LXQt, Enlightenment and Razor-Qt.

Officially supported Linux distributions

As mentioned, the software is distributed as binary packages for DEB- and RPM-based distributions of Linux, which means that it can be successfully used on Ubuntu, Debian GNU/Linux, Fedora, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, openSUSE, Linux Mint and Mageia. Bibfilex can  also be installed in Arch Linux and supports both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.

What is new in this release:

• New functionality to check for double items in the file in use (see menu item "Tools - Check for double items...").
• If the sort field is "ID Item", when a file is opened, the last item is selected.
• The shortcut "Ctrl + N" creates a new article.
• The smart filter, if the selected field is "author", will select all the items that contain the text to be searched, and not just that begin with it.
• The field of the smart filter is remembered by the software.
• In the "Abstract" and "Review" fields the shortcut "Ctrl + Shift + Q" inserts the \cite command along with the bibtex key of the current item; if this will be changed, it will be possibly updated also in these fields.
• The autocompletion is activated also by "Ctrl + Shift + Space bar", useful for OS X users.
• Bugs fixing.

What is new in version 1.2.5:

• Possiblity to specify the text before pages number (pag., p., etc.).
• Possibility to enter in a postnote two pages references separated by a pipe; the first one is printed after the title (for instance, to indicate the number of a paragraph of a document or of an old text) while the second one is printed at the end of the citation, like usual.
• Zoom in the abstract and review fields with Ctrl + mouse wheel.
• Bugs fixing.

What is new in version 1.2.4:

• "Return" on items grid activate the editor and move the cursor at the end of the text.

What is new in version 1.2.3:

• Possibility to add and remove one or more keywords in a drop down list below the keyword filter to recall them more easily.
• Possibility to include in the BibTex key the family names of all the authors of an item.
• Recreate the BibTex keys of all the items of the file in use or only the filtered ones.
• Possibility to store one or more keywords in memory with "Ctrl + Shift + E", and to insert or to remove it within an item with "Ctrl + E".
• Menu item to copy the file in use along with possible attachment directory in another location.
• Shortcut "Ctrl + Shift + H" to remove single CR in Abstract and Review fields (only empty lines are left unchanged), to clean texts pasted from a pdf or the web.

What is new in version 0.1.7:

• This version improves the importation procedure to import BibTex files exported from Mendely (you need to load and save the file with JabRef if carriage returns are present within it) or downloaded from Google Books.
• "Copy plain citation" and "Copy formatted citation" now copy in the clipboard the citations of all the selected items, if multi-selection is activated.
• This release can import more BibTex files at a time.
• Click on the title of the items grid to automatically resize the width of the columns.
• A new icons set. Bugfixes.

What is new in version 0.1.6:

• This version adds bugfixes and buttons to browse the items.

What is new in version 0.1.5:

• The ability to compose the citation of an item according to a user-defined pattern and copy it in the clipboard Latex or HTML format; in the last case, the citation may be pasted in a word processor like LibreOffice Writer, maintaining font formatting (italics, small caps, etc.).
• Stop list to prevent articles and the like from being included in the BibTex key when it's automatically generated.
• The ability to activate or deactivate the multi-selection in the items grid with a check box.
• Many bugs have been fixed.
• Qt (KDE) and OS X (Carbon library needed) packages have been added.
• There is a more complete manual.

• This version replaces the \cite and \printbibliography commands in a Latex document with extended citations and bibliography taken from the file in use, which are composed according to a user-defined pattern within the software.
