PZL Games is an open source and cross-platform piece of software that comprises of a collection of ten different puzzle games, such as Sudoku, Jigsaw, Sokoban, Boggle, Minesweeper, Scrabbler, Futoshiki, Kakuro, Sumpuzzle, and Codeword, for the GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
What's in the package
The software is distributed as a single zip archive that contains .pyw files, which can be executed as binaries, but also include the source code, as well as icons for each game. In addition, a launcher is provided in the package, allowing the user to choose which game to launch.
Getting started with PZL Games
The .pyw files are engineered to be double clicked in order to run the respective game, but this function is not available on Linux distributions. Therefore, you will have to run the launcher script called "pzl_launcher.pyw," which will give you quick access to all the included games.
Thousands of built-in puzzles in a small package
Each game comes with thousands of built-in puzzles, color coded hints, animated solutions, and hint algorithms. Furthermore, the user can add extra puzzles from third-party files.
Under the hood and availability
All of the games are programmed in Python, using the TkInter module for the graphical user interface (GUI). It should run without problems on any 32-bit or 64-bit GNU/Linux or Microsoft Windows platform, as long as all requirements are met.
Bottom line
Summing up, PZL Games is a great collection of puzzle games that will entertain even the most curious of young minds. We do hope that future releases will include even more games.
